Άνθρωπο βλέπεις, ψυχή δεν βλέπεις- You See the Person, Not the Soul

You See the Person, Not the Soul

Experiences shape character and build our personalities. It is important to keep this in mind before we speak or pass judgment on someone.

Many times, I have regretted something I thought or said because, later on, I came to understand the story someone carried within them—and perhaps the reason they reacted the way they did or became the person they were. My father used to say, "You see the person, but you do not see the soul." He was right. Most people carry burdens that no one else can see.

Blessed are those who manage to carry those burdens until the end without breaking.

Not long ago, while teaching my son how to make the sign of the Cross, I realised something. We teach our children how to make the sign of the Cross, yet we rarely teach them how to carry their own cross. And perhaps that is the most important lesson of all.

Throughout my life, I have met countless people and have had—though I still do not know whether it was a blessing or a burden—the privilege of witnessing some of the most personal and difficult moments of their lives. I have seen fear, anxiety, pain, and sheer terror overwhelm people. Sometimes these emotions transform them into someone they hardly recognise; other times, they simply break them.

In moments like these, perhaps the wisest thing we can do is remain silent. In those moments, words often feel inadequate. Rather than filling the silence with empty phrases or easy philosophies, it is better to set words aside and speak through the heart. As I have said before, silence has a voice of its own.

So let us try not to rush to judge anyone. And when we do—because we are human, and we will do it again—let us first look for the circumstances that may explain another person's behaviour. More often than not, they exist. Every person is fighting a battle of their own, carrying their own cross and living with wounds that are invisible to everyone else.
